KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) Balendra Shah has announced that all land administration services will be made available through local governments within the next month.
In a social media post, Shah said the government aims to fully decentralise land administration services as part of its 100-point governance reform agenda. “Singha Durbar in every village, land administration at the local level,” he wrote.
He said the essence of a federal democratic republic is to bring the government closer to citizens by ensuring that public services reach them, rather than requiring them to travel long distances to access government offices.
“Embracing this principle, the Government of Nepal has set a target of fully implementing land administration services at the local level as an integral part of its 100-point governance reform agenda,” he stated.
According to Shah, the process of transferring land administration services to local governments has been initiated in accordance with the Constitution of Nepal, the Local Government Operation Act, 2074, and the Ordinance to Amend Certain Nepal Acts Related to Land, 2083.
He said land administration services are currently being provided successfully through 33 local governments. The government has now decided to accelerate the process and make it mandatory for all remaining local governments to provide these services within the next month.
Shah also said the federal government is committed to providing the necessary support to local governments to implement the initiative. “With this initiative, local governments will be able to fully exercise their constitutional and legal authority over land administration,” he wrote on Facebook.
He added that the move is expected to make land administration and surveying services more accessible, simpler and more convenient for citizens, while easing legal restrictions that have kept certain powers concentrated at the federal level.
