Damage assessment in disaster-hit Parbat’s Jaljala nears completion

MYAGDI: The collection of details and assessment of damage caused by monsoon-related disasters in Jaljala Rural Municipality of Parbat district, adjacent to Beni Bazaar, the headquarters of Myagdi, has reached its final stage.

A joint team of elected representatives and technical personnel has completed on-site inspections and damage assessments in several wards to determine the requirements for the reconstruction, retrofitting and rehabilitation of private houses damaged by floods and landslides along the Kaligandaki River following heavy rainfall.

According to Jaljala Rural Municipality Vice-Chairperson Deepak Acharya, inspections have been completed in wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 9, where officials collected damage details, assessed losses and distributed relief materials. The assessment and relief distribution in Ward No. 7, particularly in the severely affected areas of Dhairing and Nagliwang, are expected to be completed within the next couple of days.

“After completing relief distribution to disaster-affected families, we have moved towards managing temporary shelters and initiating reconstruction,” Acharya said.

He added that preliminary assessments of damage to private houses would be prepared and entered into the relevant information system. Upon completion of the process, certificates confirming data collection will be issued, eligible beneficiaries identified, and their details forwarded to the district authorities. Recommendations will also be submitted to the District Disaster Management Committee to determine the level of retrofitting, reconstruction and rehabilitation support required by each household.

According to Rural Municipality Chief Administrative Officer Sandeep Lamichhane, floods and landslides have affected 316 houses in the municipality. Of these, 126 have been completely destroyed, 50 partially damaged and 140 placed at risk.

Apart from private homes, the disasters have caused extensive damage to agricultural land, roads, drinking water systems, irrigation facilities and infrastructure built to protect settlements. Farmland producing crops such as millet, rice and oranges has also suffered significant losses.

Jaljala Rural Municipality-8, particularly Farse, has been among the worst-affected areas, with 75 houses swept away and another 27 at risk. Families displaced by the floods who have no alternative accommodation or means of arranging shelter on their own have been relocated to temporary camps.

Tangwang and Khanigaun in Ward No. 7 have also suffered significant damage, while the Kaligandaki River flood has affected Lamakhet in Ward No. 4. Landslides have displaced 35 families from Tangwang and Khanigaun.

Rural Municipality Chairperson Raju Prasad Acharya said basic relief supplies had been arranged in the affected areas and plans for both short-term and long-term rehabilitation were being implemented.

“In the immediate term, we plan to provide temporary shelters along with corrugated zinc sheets, utensils, clothes and food supplies,” he said. “In the long run, we will rebuild damaged houses and physical infrastructure in line with government policies.”

He said reconstruction efforts would also cover damaged roads, drinking water facilities, irrigation systems and school buildings, while measures would be taken to protect vulnerable settlements. The rural municipality is coordinating with the federal and provincial governments as well as development partners to mobilise the financial resources needed for reconstruction and flood and landslide control.
