KATHMANDU: The government is preparing to allow security agencies to sell and distribute liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in an effort to ensure supplies during potential shortages.
Rudrasingh Tamang, Secretary at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, said arrangements were being made to facilitate LPG distribution through outlets operated by security agencies if the regular supply system faces difficulties.
Speaking at a program on “Easy Supply Management and Monitoring of Daily Consumables” organized by the Development, Economic Affairs and Good Governance Committee on Thursday, Tamang said security agencies, including the Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force, are already involved in the sale and distribution of petroleum products.
“Security agencies are already selling and distributing petroleum products. It would be easier if LPG could also be distributed through their outlets,” he said.
Tamang said security agencies that operate fuel outlets also have one or two LPG outlets in some locations. The government is therefore preparing the necessary arrangements to use these outlets to maintain supplies in emergency situations.
He said the measure was being considered in view of the possibility of an LPG shortage and the need to ensure uninterrupted supply during emergencies.
