How do 15-20 helicopters operate in the same area?

KATHMANDU: As many as 15 to 20 helicopters are operating simultaneously in flood-affected areas for rescue and relief operations.

Amid questions over how air traffic is being managed with so many helicopters flying in the same area, Devendra Prasad Shrestha, chief air traffic controller at Tribhuvan International Airport, said flights were being coordinated through communication among the pilots.

According to Shrestha, pilots of helicopters deployed for rescue and relief operations remain connected through a common radio frequency.

They inform one another about their positions, flight directions and surrounding air traffic while operating in the affected areas.

Shrestha said the helicopters can operate simultaneously because pilots maintain the necessary separation between flights through mutual coordination.
