WASHINGTON DC: US President Donald Trump has said he has called off planned military strikes on Iran on the condition that a deal with Tehran can be reached quickly.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he decided to cancel the attack while efforts continued to rapidly finalize an agreement. He said the proposed deal would include the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat.
Trump said the decision was made in coordination with Israel and came amid reports in US media that Washington had been considering new and intensified strikes against Iran over the weekend.
Earlier, Tehran accused the United States of escalating tensions and warned that any regional country cooperating with Washington could be drawn into a wider conflict.
In his post, Trump said the United States was fully prepared for military action against Iran, claiming a level of military power and readiness unmatched since the Second World War.
However, he said he chose to suspend the strikes after Iran and several Middle Eastern countries urged Washington to delay any attack to allow diplomatic efforts to continue.
Trump also suggested that progress had already been made toward an agreement, stating that the broad framework of a deal had been reached. He said the arrangement would include the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and measures aimed at ending Iran’s nuclear threat.
