Three NC leaders hold talks amid internal rift, further meeting scheduled Friday

KATHMANDU: Three senior leaders of the Nepali Congress (NC) held discussions on Thursday amid growing tensions within the party’s establishment faction.

The meeting took place at the Mid-Baneshwor residence of Bimalendra Nidhi and was attended by Prakash Man Singh and Shashank Koirala.

According to a source present at the meeting, the leaders discussed recent internal disputes, including reports that the establishment faction is preparing to open a separate party office.

The leaders are scheduled to meet again on Friday at the invitation of former acting party president Purna Bahadur Khadka. Discussions are expected to focus on preparations for the party’s 15th General Convention, as well as the issue of the proposed separate office.

A source said Thursday’s meeting concluded that the party should remain united and prioritize preparations for the upcoming general convention rather than move toward a split.

Leaders close to NC General Secretary Gagan Thapa, however, have dismissed reports of a separate office, claiming the establishment faction is merely attempting to exert pressure.

The internal dispute follows the party’s special general convention, in which Gagan Thapa was elected party president ahead of the Falgun 21 election. The outcome has been rejected by establishment leaders, including Sher Bahadur Deuba and former acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka.
