U.S. special envoy Sergio Gor concludes Nepal visit

KATHMANDU: U.S. Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor has concluded a highly productive visit to Nepal.

During his stay, he held high-level meetings with Rastriya Swatantra Party Chairman Rabi Lamichhane, Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal, and Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle, and also engaged in constructive discussions with Nepali business leaders.

The visit focused on strengthening the U.S.-Nepal partnership and expanding commercial ties, including exploring new opportunities for U.S. businesses in Nepal’s growing technology sector.

Special Envoy Gor also visited Everest Base Camp, where he received a briefing on American commercial drone technology and initiatives by Nepali organizations leading the Everest clean-up campaign. The new drone technology is expected to enable deliveries on Mount Everest within minutes, significantly reducing the need for multi-day treks.

In a statement, Special Envoy Gor said, “The United States leads in innovation, and we are pleased to partner with Nepali companies to bring cutting-edge technology to Nepal. We are hopeful that Nepal’s new government will further strengthen the productive partnership between our two nations.”

In addition, he attended a ceremony at Nhu: Chhen Baha in Kathmandu marking the return of the Akshobhya Buddha statue from the United States. The U.S. has reiterated its commitment to repatriating cultural and religious artifacts taken from Nepal. During his visit, he also toured the historic Bhaktapur Durbar Square, experiencing Nepal’s rich cultural heritage.
