UML internal rejuvenation debate intensifies, youth leaders call for leadership change and structural overhaul

KATHMANDU: The internal call for restructuring and leadership change within the CPN (Unified Marxist–Leninist) party has intensified, as young leaders raised questions over the party’s current structure and working style during a “Rejuvenation gathering” held in Minbhawan, Kathmandu.

The gathering, organized on Saturday at Nepal Commerce Campus, included central committee members and young leaders who openly questioned the party leadership and organizational direction.

Central committee members Jhapad Rawal, Naresh Rokaya, and Samik Badal were among those present. Leaders including Ramesh Paudel, Roshan Basnet, and Sujan Kadariya reportedly expressed the view that party chair KP Sharma Oli should step down.

Other participants included former central committee member Nabina Lama, ANNFSU former chair Sujan kadariya, intellectual council chair Gajendra Thapaliya, and Youth Federation deputy general secretary Upendra Shahi, among others.

The main proposals presented in the meeting included dissolving the current central committee, forming an interim committee incorporating external members, and holding a special general convention. Participants also demanded the dissolution and restructuring of provincial and district committees, along with a review and renewal of party memberships.

Leaders at the event criticized the party for lacking ideological clarity, accusing it of shifting its stance depending on political circumstances, likening its behavior to that of multiple rival parties.

Earlier, some leaders had also initiated signature campaigns demanding a special general convention. Following the recent formation of a new government led by Balen Shah and reports related to Oli’s detention, internal voices for restructuring have reportedly become more vocal.

Within the party, a section of central leaders is now seen aligning with the restructuring agenda, while discussions at the secretariat level have intensified. Meanwhile, chair KP Sharma Oli, currently recovering at his residence in Gundu, Bhaktapur following a surgical procedure, has been unable to take full active participation, and calls for leadership transition are gaining institutional momentum.
