KP Sharma Oli gives statement from hospital in Gen-Z protest case

KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister and KP Sharma Oli, arrested last Saturday in connection with the September 2025 Gen-Z movement that left dozens dead and injured, has begun giving his statement to authorities from Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.

Oli, who continues to receive treatment for multiple health issues, is unlikely to be discharged immediately. Consequently, teams from the District Police Office and the District Public Prosecutor’s Office have visited him at the hospital to record his testimony.

“Doctors have indicated that he cannot be discharged immediately due to his medical condition, so the statement-taking is being conducted at the hospital,” said Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, spokesperson for the Kathmandu District Police Office.

Oli was arrested from his residence in Gundu last Saturday and admitted to the hospital the following day. Meanwhile, former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak remains in police custody at the district office, where his statement is also being recorded. His testimony was taken at a nearby government prosecutor’s office.

Both Oli and Lekhak were first produced before the District Court, which granted the police a five-day remand. Authorities are now preparing to extend this remand on Thursday. For Lekhak, the next remand is expected to be conducted via video call, similar to Oli’s previous hospital-based remand.

The arrests follow recommendations from a commission led by former Justice Gauri Bahadur Karki, formed to investigate the violence and destruction during the Gen-Z movement. Both leaders face charges related to loss of life in connection with the protest.
