Deuba calls top Nepali Congress leaders for talks amid dispute over special convention

KATHMANDU: A dispute has intensified within the Nepali Congress after the party’s two general secretaries announced a special general convention by suspending the regular convention schedule.

Amid the growing controversy, party President Sher Bahadur Deuba has called senior leaders for an urgent discussion at his residence in an attempt to resolve the issue.

Following the Gen-Z movement, Deuba had handed over the responsibility of acting party president to Purna Bahadur Khadka. However, as tensions escalated over the convention decision, Deuba convened the meeting to seek a way forward, according to his private secretariat.

Deuba invited top leaders for talks at his private residence in Maharajgunj on Friday morning. Acting President Khadka reached Deuba’s residence first, after which other senior leaders were also called for the discussion.

The dispute erupted after Congress General Secretaries Bishwa Prakash Sharma and Gagan Thapa on Thursday announced a special general convention, putting the regular convention on hold. The move was immediately rejected by the establishment faction, which said the decision was unacceptable, further deepening divisions within the party.

Following the announcement of the special convention, the Nepali Congress has also called a Central Working Committee meeting for Friday afternoon. Deuba summoned senior leaders for talks ahead of the meeting in an effort to ease tensions and find a solution to the growing internal rift.
