Deuba faction of NC to hold ward conventions today

KATHMANDU: The faction of the Nepali Congress (NC) led by former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba is set to hold ward-level conventions today as part of its parallel organizational process.

The convention comes as the party’s establishment faction prepares for the 15th General Convention scheduled to begin on October 4. The Deuba faction has also launched its own convention process and announced a separate schedule for the party’s 15th General Convention.

The faction has scheduled its general convention for December 7–9, 2026. Under the announced timetable, municipal conventions will be held on October 6, provincial assembly constituency conventions on October 9, and provincial conventions on November 20. The faction has also informed the Election Commission about its schedule.

According to party leader Kiran Raj Poudel, the faction has deployed election officers from its Central Election Committee across all 77 districts. Election coordinators have been assigned in 56 districts for the ward conventions beginning today.

The Deuba faction had previously called for postponing the general convention process, arguing that the dispute over the party’s official status remains pending before the Supreme Court. However, after the establishment faction proceeded with preparations for its convention, the Deuba faction also began its own organizational process.

Dr. Shashank Koirala, coordinator of the faction’s general convention organizing committee, said the party organization must be strengthened from the ward level and made more disciplined and responsive to the public.

He called on Nepali Congress leaders, cadres and active members to participate in the ward conventions with enthusiasm and confidence.

The Deuba faction has not participated in the general convention process initiated by the establishment faction, maintaining that the Central Working Committee elected at the 14th General Convention remains the legitimate party body.
