Gagan Kumar Thapa says politics should serve people

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has said politics should be viewed not merely as a means to gain power but as the greatest instrument for public and humanitarian service.

Speaking at the inauguration of a disaster preparedness and response training programme organised by the party’s Policy, Research and Training Academy at the party’s central office in Sanepa on Saturday, Thapa said politics dedicated to public service is the foundation of social transformation.

He stressed the need for skills, preparedness and a well-organised mechanism in disaster management, saying that emotions, goodwill and spontaneous efforts alone are insufficient during emergencies.

Thapa said trained personnel and advance preparation are essential for effective rescue and relief operations.

He also announced plans to establish volunteer mechanisms in all 753 local levels across the country. According to him, the network will operate throughout the year, focusing on disaster risk reduction, public awareness and preparedness rather than becoming active only after disasters occur.

Expressing sympathy for disaster victims, Thapa said greater sensitivity is needed towards the economic, social and personal losses they endure. He also criticised the growing tendency to prioritise reactions on social media over genuine human compassion.

Thapa stressed the need to strengthen coordination among political parties, volunteers and local communities to ensure that public safety remains at the centre of disaster management efforts.
