Active monsoon raises risk of heavy rain today



KATHMANDU: Active monsoon conditions are expected to bring widespread rainfall across Nepal today, with the Weather Forecasting Division warning of possible heavy rain in isolated hilly areas of Bagmati, Gandaki, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces.

According to the Division, monsoon winds are affecting the entire country, while the monsoon low-pressure line remains south of its average position in western Nepal and near its average position in the eastern region.

At present, the Terai of Lumbini Province is partly cloudy, while the rest of the country is generally cloudy. Light to moderate rainfall is occurring in some places of Bagmati Province and at one or two locations in Koshi, Gandaki, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces.

The Division has forecast generally cloudy conditions across the country this afternoon. Light to moderate rain or snowfall is likely at a few places in the Himalayan region and at many places in the hilly areas. Thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are also possible in parts of the Terai.

There is a possibility of heavy rainfall at one or two places in the hilly areas of Bagmati, Gandaki, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces.

Tonight, weather conditions are expected to remain generally cloudy nationwide. Moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is likely at some places in the Himalayan and hilly regions and at many places in the Terai.

The Division has also forecast heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, as well as in parts of Madhesh, Lumbini, and the Terai region of Sudurpaschim Province.

Authorities have urged the public and concerned agencies to remain alert, warning that heavy rainfall could increase the risk of flash floods, flooding, and landslides. The Division said adverse weather may also affect daily life, agriculture, health services, tourism, mountaineering activities, and both road and air transportation.
