Army vows to ensure safe elections, security up to ballot transportation

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Army has said it will ensure the upcoming election is conducted in a secure manner, providing protection up to the transportation of ballot boxes to counting centres.

Issuing a statement on Sunday, the Directorate of Public Relations and Information said the Nepali Army has been deployed in every election since the 1991 House of Representatives election, taking responsibility for security at ballot printing centres, transportation of ballot papers and delivering ballot boxes safely to counting venues.

The army stated that ballot papers are transported from Kathmandu to election offices in all districts, and during the election, it provides security in the third security layer. After voting concludes, a joint team escorts ballot boxes to the counting centres.

As in previous elections, the statement noted that once voting is completed, ballot boxes will be transported from polling stations according to established protocol by a joint team comprising Nepal Police, Armed Police Force Nepal, the election officer, designated representatives of political parties and the Nepali Army.

The army reaffirmed its commitment to conduct the forthcoming election in coordination and cooperation with concerned agencies under the integrated security plan.

It added that all election security arrangements are being carried out in accordance with the ‘House of Representatives Member Election Act, 2074 BS’ and the ‘House of Representatives Member Election Integrated Security Plan, 2082 BS.’
