Nepali Congress postpones regular general convention
Nepali Congress General Secretaries Bishwo Prakash Sharma and Gagan Kumar Thapa have announced the postponement of the party’s regular general convention. In a statement issued by the two general secretaries, it is said that the regular general convention, whose schedule was fixed by the Central Working Committee on Mangsir 15, has been postponed due to delays in revising the proposed timetable and in completing other related tasks.
Travel ban on former Home Minister Lekhak lifted
The investigation commission formed to probe the incidents of September 8 and 9 has lifted the restrictions imposed on former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak. The commission’s secretariat informed the Ministry of Home Affairs in writing that the restrictions on Lekhak’s foreign travel have been withdrawn, stating that the actions required under the earlier decision taken for investigation purposes have been completed.
APF says man killed during retaliatory firing while checking vehicles near India border
The Armed Police Force (APF) has said that a man was killed during retaliatory firing while security personnel were checking vehicles entering Nepal from India near the APF Base Camp BOP Laukahi in Sunsari. According to the APF, the deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Vijay Sah of Koshi Rural Municipality–1. The incident occurred when APF personnel attempted to inspect two auto city safaris coming from India. APF sources said that during the check, a person riding in one of the vehicles opened fire at the security personnel. In response, the APF returned fire. Five rounds were fired from an SLR, and during the exchange, city safari driver Vijay Sah was shot dead on the spot.
30 years after Mahakali Treaty, uncertainty persists over water flow in third-phase irrigation canal
Even three decades after the signing of the Mahakali Treaty between Nepal and India, uncertainty continues over the flow of water in the main canal of the third phase of the Mahakali Irrigation Project. According to the Mahakali Treaty, India is required to release 300 cusecs of water to Nepal from the Tanakpur Barrage during the dry season and 1,000 cusecs during the monsoon. Nepal has prepared irrigation infrastructure to utilize the water in line with the treaty provisions, provided India releases water as agreed.
Probe panel prepares to summon UML chair KP Oli for statement on September 8-9
The commission formed to investigate the incidents of September 8 and 9 is preparing to send a letter to CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli, asking him to appear for a statement. Speaking to journalists outside the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers on Thursday, Commission Chair Gauri Bahadur Karki said preparations are underway to formally summon UML chair Oli in connection with the Gen-Z movement-related incidents.
Here is how RSP can change its proportional representation closed list
The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), which entered Nepali politics as a self-proclaimed alternative force, has faced widespread criticism over the proportional representation (PR) closed list it submitted for the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5. The party has been criticized for submitting 21 PR candidates from Chitwan district alone, the district from which party chair Rabi Lamichhane is expected to contest the election. Questions have also been raised over the absence of representation from the Magar community, one of Nepal’s largest indigenous groups, and the inclusion of individuals with no prior political background, including industrialist Chandra Prasad Dhakal and folk singer Prakash Saput.
Poverty fails to stop Siraha teen from chasing dream of becoming doctor
Working with bricks by day and studying by night, Satyanarayan Safi from Siraha has proven that poverty can block the path, but it cannot stop the destination. Born in Shripur village, just three kilometers from the Baryarpatti Chowk on the Postal Highway, Satyanarayan grew up in a small, dilapidated hut. Despite the crushing weight of poverty, the hope nurtured inside that hut kept him going. Amid these hardships, he dreamt of one goal: becoming a doctor.
40 organizations, including 4 international bodies, approved to observe House of Representatives election
A total of 40 organizations, including four international bodies, have received approval to observe the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5. According to Election Commission spokesperson and Joint Secretary Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, permission has been granted to 36 national and four international organizations to conduct election observation for the House of Representatives Member Election.
Kathmandu residents protest against river and stream regulations
Residents living along roads and riverbanks in the Kathmandu Valley staged a protest today, demanding the repeal of existing river and stream regulations. The demonstration took place at Maitighar Mandala, where participants raised slogans and voiced their grievances. Protesters chanted slogans such as, “Give justice, not decisions; repeal non-judicial stream regulations,” “Repeal non-judicial road and river regulations that displace people,” “Rivers cannot be encroached upon, people cannot be displaced in the name of regulations,” and “Repeal river and stream regulations.”
Nepal-China border in Rasuwa resumes operations
Nepal’s northern Rasuwagadhi International Border Point has fully resumed operations from today, following months of disruption caused by flood damage, according to local authorities. Chief District Officer of Rasuwa, Rajesh Panthi, said the border point began operating again this morning after remaining completely closed since July 8, when floods in the Lhende River washed away the Friendship Bridge (Miteri Bridge) connecting Nepal and China.
Over one million foreign tourists visited Nepal in a year
More than one million foreign tourists entered Nepal in a single year, according to data from the Department of Immigration. Immigration records show that 1,015,378 foreign tourists arrived in Nepal in 2015, while 982,561 foreign nationals departed the country during the same period. Most foreign nationals visit Nepal primarily for tourism purposes. The Department of Immigration issues 10 different types of visas to foreign citizens, including tourist, labor, and study visas, among others.
Gold and silver prices go down
After rising continuously over the past few days, gold and silver prices in the local market declined on Thursday. According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, the price of hallmarked gold has been fixed at Rs 259,600 per tola, down from Wednesday’s rate. Similarly, the price of silver has been set at Rs 4,415 per tola.
Gen-Z activists protest RSP proportional list, warn against voting if not revised
Gen-Z activists have expressed strong dissatisfaction over the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) proportional representation (PR) list, alleging that it goes against the spirit of the Constitution and the core objective of inclusive representation. Activists argue that a movement built against nepotism, favoritism and “nepo-babies” has itself contradicted its own ideals by prioritizing individuals with access, wealth and personal connections rather than historically marginalized communities.
Flood-damaged BP Highway operating via risky diversions; reconstruction yet to be funded
Sections of the BP Highway (Dhulikhel–Sindhuli–Bardibas) damaged by last year’s floods and landslides are currently operating through temporary diversions, posing risks to travelers and increasing travel time. The flood and landslides that struck in September 2024 severely damaged road sections at Katunje Besi, Mangaltar, and Nepal Thok. After the floodwaters washed away parts of the road, temporary routes have been constructed directly along the riverbed to keep traffic moving this year.
