Election 64 days away: 64 parties submit closed lists for PR

KATHMANDU: With 64 days remaining until the election to the House of Representatives (HoR), various political parties have submitted their closed lists for proportional representation (PR) to the Election Commission (EC) for the upcoming House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5, 2026.

According to the Election Commission, all 64 political parties submitted closed lists. Of these, 54 parties have submitted lists to contest the election under their own election symbols, while 10 parties have submitted closed lists to contest under four shared election symbols.

As per the Constitution of Nepal, 165 members of the House of Representatives are elected through the first-past-the-post electoral system, while 110 members are elected through proportional representation.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has also released a list of required documents for candidates contesting the National Assembly election scheduled for January 25, 2026. Candidates must submit a copy of their Nepali citizenship certificate and a certificate confirming inclusion in the final voter list of any rural municipality or municipality in accordance with the Voter List Act, 2073.

Candidates are also required to submit a receipt showing the deposit of Rs 10,000. A 50 percent discount on the deposit will be provided to women, Dalits, minority communities, and economically disadvantaged candidates. Economically disadvantaged candidates must submit a recommendation letter from the concerned local level.

Additional requirements include the voter number, details of the candidate’s assets, house number and location, land details, and a self-declaration stating that the candidate is not disqualified under federal law.

Further, candidates must submit a declaration confirming that they do not hold any office of profit, a resignation certificate from any responsible or elected position, and a nomination paper signed by the candidate or their representative, proposer, or supporter.

The Commission stated that candidates already included in the closed list for the 2079 BS Provincial Assembly election under the proportional representation system must also submit a withdrawal document.

The names of proposers and seconders must be accompanied by documents confirming their inclusion in the voters’ list of the electoral college, which consists of concerned provincial assembly members, rural municipality chairpersons or vice-chairpersons, and municipal mayors or deputy mayors within the respective province.

The Election Commission has already appointed election officers in all seven provinces and established election offices as part of its preparations. Political parties have also begun preliminary preparations for candidate selection.
