Prime Minister Karki assures security and timely elections

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) Sushila Karki and Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal have urged the public and political parties not to doubt the government’s commitment to holding the House of Representatives elections on March 5, 2026, assuring that security arrangements are under control and preparations are moving ahead as planned.

During an interaction with editors from various media outlets at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, both leaders emphasized that the government is working through dialogue and consensus to ensure a peaceful and credible election.

Editors present at the meeting raised concerns about possible delays in the polls due to security challenges — including low police morale, looting of weapons during the September 9 unrest, escaped prisoners, and potential disruptions by traditional political forces.

In response, Prime Minister Karki said that out of around 1,200 weapons looted during the incident, about half have already been recovered, while others have been located and are expected to be retrieved soon. She also noted that around 150 police weapons were destroyed during the arson on September 9.

Prime Minister Karki added that several ministers are focusing on implementing good governance measures in line with the Gen-Z movement’s demands, while others are working to complete preparations for the elections.

She confirmed that discussions on appointing a new Chief Election Commissioner have begun, though legal and procedural hurdles remain. The Prime Minister also expressed willingness to hold further talks with leaders of established political parties while continuing engagement with Gen-Z representatives.

Home Minister Aryal, who also took part in the meeting, said the government’s priority since its formation has been to restore normalcy and create a conducive environment for elections.

He stated that tensions between the Gen-Z protest and political parties have eased, allowing for productive dialogue. Referring to his recent visit to Madhesh Province, Aryal said consultations with local stakeholders have reinforced confidence in holding elections on schedule.

He further asserted that law and order have improved significantly and that the morale of security personnel has risen due to fair and transparent administrative decisions.

“All the obstacles that once threatened the election process have now been resolved,” Aryal said. “With the improved political atmosphere and strengthened security confidence, there is no doubt the elections will be held as planned.”
