KATHMANDU: Resham Lal Chaudhary, leader of the Nagarik Unmukti Party Nepal, has called the Gen-Z movement of September 8 and 9 not just a protest but a civil uprising. Chaudhary made these remarks during the political dialogue organized by the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), titled ‘Achievements of the Gen-Z movement, Future Path, and Solutions.’
He challenged the notion of the movement being just an agenda, stating, “Who said this is a protest? This is a people’s revolt.”
Chaudhary cautioned the participants, saying the Gen-Z movement was not just a temporary disturbance but an indication of deeper unrest. He urged the youth involved to stay alert, hinting at the ongoing struggles and political risks.
Chaudhary also reflected on the repeated attacks on the Tharu community, including his own involvement in the infamous Tikapur incident, which led to an eight-year jail sentence. Although he claimed not to have participated in the incident, he expressed deep grievances about the consequences of being wrongly implicated.
He recalled how he was treated in prison, with iron chains around his limbs and the medical care he received. Chaudhary thanked former Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai for providing him relief during that time, while Bhattarai, who was also present at the event, listened attentively.
The Rastriya Swatantra Party’s political dialogue also saw the presence of former Janamat Party spokesperson Sharad Singh Yadav, who had announced his resignation from the Janamat Party a month ago. It remains unclear whether Yadav will join Chaudhary’s party or pursue other political avenues.
