Classic ‘Maitighar’ song reimagined to reach new generation

KATHMANDU: The iconic title song ‘Pran Bhanda Pyaro Maitighar’ from the classic Nepali film “Maitighar” has been reimagined for a new generation.

Originally sung by legendary Indian singer Asha Bhosle, the beloved track has now been recreated in a fresh arrangement for an upcoming film bearing the same name.

Producer Rohit Adhikari, who is behind the new “Maitighar”, said that while the film shares its name and song with the original, it carries a modern essence while honoring the old. “The timeless melody has been preserved, but it’s presented in a contemporary setting,” he said.

The new version of the song features vocals by Sanjeevani and retains the original composition by the late Jaidev and lyrics by Kiran Kharel. According to Adhikari, only the voice has changed, keeping the heart of the song intact.

“After deciding to revive the “Maitighar” title, we wanted to bring the legendary song to a new audience. It remains central to the film’s story and emotional journey,” Adhikari explained.

To further engage audiences, the production team has announced a nationwide video competition. Participants are invited to create a 40-second to 2-minute audio-visual (dance or creative interpretation) based on the new version of the song. The best entry will win a cash prize of Rs. 500,000. The winner will be announced before the film’s official release.

“This competition will help connect the younger generation with the legacy of “Maitighar”, and also serve as a promotional boost for the film,” Adhikari added.

The song features performances by actresses Upasana Singh Thakuri and Shyama Shree Sherpa. Choreography is by Kabiraj Gahatraj, cinematography by Mankrishna Maharjan and Sushan Prajapati, and editing by Surendra Poudel.

Directed by Milan Tamang, the new Maitighar stars Kedar Prasad Ghimire, Dheeraj Magar, Prakash Saput, Yubaraj Lama, Buddhi Tamang, Shishir Bangdel, Rajani Gurung, Santosh Shahi, Phool Kumar Bamjan, and Sangita Thapa.

The film is set to release during the Dashain festival, starting Phulpati (September 29), according to the production team.
