National Cardiac Centre hosts free heart camp in Tokha

KATHMANDU: The National Cardiac Centre (NCC) organized a free heart camp in Tokha Municipality, Kathmandu on Saturday providing essential healthcare services to local residents.

The initiative addresses the growing burden of heart disease and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus—major causes of mortality in Nepal.

The camp served 200 patients, many of whom were elderly and unaware of their underlying health conditions.

The camp offered free screenings, including electrocardiograms (ECG), echocardiograms (ECHO), blood pressure measurements, and blood sugar tests to detect NCDs and other health issues early.

Patients were provided with at least a one-month supply of medication for hypertension, high cholesterol, or diabetes to encourage treatment compliance.

Personalized counseling and awareness sessions on heart disease prevention were also conducted, and informational pamphlets were distributed.

NCC has also established a Community Wellness Clinic in Tokha Municipality to provide ongoing preventive care and education.

Dr. Om Murti Anil, founder of NCC, stated, “Early detection of heart disease and NCDs greatly improves outcomes. Our camps and Community Wellness Clinic bring vital services to people’s doorsteps, promoting cardiovascular risk screening and enabling timely interventions for healthier lives.”

Dr. Sagar Thapa, a physician at the camp, said, “We identified numerous cases of high blood pressure and elevated blood sugar levels among individuals who believed they were healthy. These screenings empower people to take control of their health.”

The event was supported by a dedicated team of medical professionals, including Dr. Rohit Murarka, Dr. Ashok Shrestha, Dr. Manish Bartaula, Dr. Om Murti Nikhil, and Clinic Manager Santosh Rauniyar, along with 30 volunteers comprising nurses and support staff.

Over the past five years, NCC has served approximately 7,000 patients through various community-level free heart camps, offering diagnostic tests and free medications.

With initiatives like the free heart camp and the Wellness Clinic, NCC continues its commitment to improving cardiovascular health and well-being at the community level.
