KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has strongly objected to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s claim that former King Gyanendra Shah summoned controversial entrepreneur Durga Prasai to his residence and appointed him as a commander of the royalist movement.
During the House of Representatives meeting on Monday, Prime Minister Oli stated that the former king had summoned Prasai to his residence on March 27 and appointed him as a so-called ‘people’s commander,’ deploying him for violent incidents.
While the Prime Minister did not name Prasai directly, his statement triggered a commotion from the RPP lawmakers.
As soon as the Prime Minister made the statement, RPP lawmakers, led by Gyanendra Bahadur Shahi, rose from their seats and protested loudly. Despite the disruptions, Prime Minister Oli continued reading his written statement.
Speaker Devraj Ghimire attempted to maintain order by urging the RPP lawmakers to take their seats, but the commotion persisted.
He repeatedly ordered the Prime Minister to stop speaking, but Oli continued to address the House.
Prime Minister Oli, visibly frustrated, responded by asserting that the issue was not about following the rules but about upholding the constitution and the democratic system. He emphasized that everyone in the country should respect the constitution and the system, adding, “We cannot obstruct politics and parliament by just making noise.”
In support of the Prime Minister, ruling party MPs from the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML banged their tables, further intensifying the heated atmosphere in the House.
The session saw a clash of words and emotions between the opposition RPP and the ruling parties.
