KATHMANDU: The Unjust River and Road Standards Victims’ Struggle Committee has announced a protest near Kupondol Bridge on Thursday, January 1, alleging that river and road standards were set unjustly.
The committee, during a press conference in Kathmandu on Tuesday, said the protest is being organized because over 84,000 households are at risk of eviction due to the current standards.
On December 19, 2023, the Supreme Court ordered a 20-meter standard with a 40-meter buffer on both sides. While the government’s earlier decisions affected victims, the committee claims the Supreme Court’s ruling has further worsened their situation. Activist Rajaram Tandukar said the committee is pressuring authorities to prevent implementation of the order.
A review hearing against the Supreme Court’s decision is scheduled for January 1. Tandukar clarified that the protest is intended to advocate for local justice and not to interfere with the court proceedings.
The committee has also demanded the annulment of river standards issued by the government on November 16, 2008.
