65 days left for election: EC sets spending limits

KATHMANDU: With 65 days remaining until the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5, 2026, the Election Commission (EC) has fixed campaign spending limits for candidates. The limits vary based on whether constituencies are classified as accessible or remote.

According to the Commission, candidates contesting from five Kathmandu constituencies, Kathmandu-1, 3, 6, 7, and 8, will be permitted to spend up to Rs 2.5 million each. Candidates from 17 constituencies have been assigned a spending ceiling of Rs 2.7 million.

Similarly, candidates in 65 constituencies will be allowed a maximum expenditure of Rs 2.9 million. The Commission has also set higher limits for other areas, allowing candidates in 52 constituencies to spend up to Rs 3.1 million and those in 26 constituencies up to Rs 3.3 million, according to commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai.

Bhattarai said candidates must open a separate bank or financial institution account for election expenses and conduct all campaign-related transactions through that account. Details of expenditures, including the name of any person authorized to spend on the candidate’s behalf, must be submitted to the Election Officer’s office.

Candidates are required to stay within the prescribed spending limits and submit a detailed report of election expenses to the Election Office within 35 days of the official announcement of election results, in accordance with the Members of the House of Representatives Act.
