Former Gorkha soldier Rai’s lucrative goat farming business

BHOJPUR: After serving in the British Army for 30 years, Surya Prasad Rai of Sirdali, Temkemaiyung Rural Municipality-2 in Bhojpur, returned to his village and established a successful goat farming business.

By investing the skills and savings earned abroad, Rai has become a model figure in his community through his commitment to commercial agriculture.

Despite having the opportunity to settle overseas, Rai chose to return to Nepal out of a deep sense of love and responsibility for his homeland. Since 2018, he has been professionally raising goats with the aim of contributing to society.

“I worked in the British Army for about 30 years and had the chance to live abroad,” he shared. “But I wanted to return to my village and set an example by engaging in commercial agriculture.”

He established the Amba Agriculture Goat Farming Firm, which now operates on approximately 12 ropanis of land and rears local Kharif breed goats. Notably, Rai relinquished the British citizenship he had acquired in order to return to Nepal and fully commit to his new venture.

In addition to goat farming, Rai is also cultivating oranges, lemons, and rudraksha on his land. He noted that although his military pension is sufficient for a comfortable life, he entered the farming business with the aim of sharing knowledge and inspiring others in the community.

Purna Prasad Rai, Ward Chairman of Temkemaiyung-3 Annapurna, praised Surya Prasad Rai’s efforts, calling his transition from soldier to farmer both “exemplary and inspirational.” The Ward Chairman added that the local government is actively supporting farmers like Rai by providing technical assistance and distributing improved breeds of goats to encourage sustainable and professional agricultural practices.

Surya Prasad Rai’s story is a testament to how dedication, patriotism, and the spirit of giving back can bring about meaningful change in rural communities.
