BEIJING: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli held a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin on Saturday.
During the talks, the two leaders discussed various aspects of Nepal–China relations and expressed their commitment to further strengthening cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Prime Minister Oli thanked China for its continued support in Nepal’s development efforts, stating that Nepal–China ties have been progressing smoothly based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. Extending best wishes for the success of the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit, he also requested China’s support for Nepal’s membership in the SCO.
Highlighting the importance of timely implementation of previously agreed projects, Oli urged China’s cooperation in areas such as fertilizer supply, petroleum exploration, human resource development, climate resilience, and people-to-people ties. He also conveyed Nepal’s strong objection to the recent India–China trade agreement via the Lipulekh route, reiterating that the territory belongs to Nepal.
President Xi assured that China would support the realization of Nepal’s vision of a “Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali.” He reaffirmed China’s commitment to implementing Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects with high standards, while also expressing appreciation for Nepal’s firm support of the “One China” policy. Xi further pledged cooperation with Nepal at multilateral platforms, including the United Nations and SCO.
Earlier in the afternoon, Oli was welcomed at Tianjin Binhai International Airport by senior Chinese officials. He is accompanied by a Nepali delegation on the visit.
Prime Minister Oli is scheduled to participate in various programs of the SCO Summit starting Sunday, hold meetings with other world leaders, and attend a welcome banquet and cultural program hosted by President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan.
