Balen Shah tells PM Oli to raise Lipulekh issue during China visit

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah has advised Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to highlight Nepal’s sovereignty over the Lipulekh pass during his China visit.

Prime Minister Oli departed for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in China this morning via Himalaya Airlines.

Shortly after the Prime Minister’s departure, Mayor Shah posted on Facebook, urging him not to forget to remind China that Lipulekh belongs to Nepal. “Best wishes for your China visit, Prime Minister,” Shah wrote. “The recent agreement between India and China to resume trade via the Lipulekh tri-junction bypasses Nepal’s consent, infringing on our sovereignty. Please ensure China is reminded that this is ours.”

The Lipulekh issue resurfaced after India and China reportedly reached the trade agreement without informing Nepal, reigniting discussions about the disputed Himalayan pass.
