Ranjita Shrestha removed as Chair of Nagarik Unmukti Party

KATHMANDU: Nagarik Unmukti Party has officially removed Ranjita Shrestha from her position as party chair, citing disciplinary violations and unauthorized decisions that allegedly contravened party statutes.

The decision was formally communicated to the Election Commission by party officials earlier this week.

According to party sources, Shrestha was ousted after she bypassed internal procedures and unilaterally appointed Shiva Prasad Bastola as acting chair.

This move reportedly triggered internal discord and prompted action from the party’s leadership, including its chief patron and influential figure, Resham Lal Chaudhary.

Chaudhary had reportedly pressed Shrestha to convene a party meeting to address growing concerns over internal governance but was met with resistance. Following continued refusal, he led the initiative to remove her from the post.

Prior to the removal, the party’s Disciplinary Committee — coordinated by Ram Lal Dagoura Tharu — had issued a 24-hour notice to Shrestha demanding clarification on her recent actions. However, she did not respond to the notice within the deadline.

Shrestha, who had once been seen as a prominent face of the party advocating for the rights of the marginalized Tharu community, has yet to issue a public statement on her removal.
