Monsoon intensifies across Nepal; heavy rainfall expected

KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology’s Weather Forecasting Division has stated that monsoon winds are currently affecting Nepal, with the monsoon’s low-pressure line slightly north of its average position over western Nepal.

According to the Division, most parts of the country are experiencing generally to fully cloudy conditions. Light to moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is occurring in many areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces, and in a few locations across the remaining provinces.

This afternoon, weather across the country will remain generally cloudy. Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is expected in many hilly areas, particularly in Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces, as well as in some areas of the other provinces.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in some districts of Sudurpaschim and in isolated hilly areas elsewhere.

Tonight, conditions are expected to remain mostly cloudy nationwide. Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is forecast in the hilly regions of Koshi, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces, along with isolated areas in the rest of the country.

One or two locations in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Sudurpaschim provinces may receive heavy rainfall. Light to moderate rain and snowfall is also possible in some high-hill and mountainous areas.

The Division has urged the public to take necessary precautions, as continued monsoon activity may cause rising river levels, flash floods, floods, and landslides. Risks to public health, agriculture, daily life, and road and air transport should be anticipated.
