Parliamentary practice needs reform: Deputy Speaker Rana

KATHMANDU: Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar has emphasized the growing need for reform in parliamentary practice to enhance the effectiveness, transparency, and accountability of the legislature.

Extending her best wishes on the occasion of Parliament Day 2082, she stated, “As the effectiveness and accountability of parliament remains a topic of public debate, it is time for us all to reflect on how to make parliament more responsive to the people. A weak parliament suppresses the voices of citizens, so we must all work to uphold parliamentary supremacy.”

In her message, Deputy Speaker Rana expressed hope that Parliament Day would inspire members of the federal parliament, the former Constituent Assembly, former lawmakers, civil servants—including those in the Parliament Secretariat—and the general public to protect and strengthen parliamentary democracy.

Parliament Day is observed annually on Asar 16 (June 30), commemorating the first-ever session of the Parliament held in Nepal in 2016 BS.

On this occasion, Deputy Speaker Rana paid heartfelt tribute to all martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the struggle to establish democracy. She called on all stakeholders to take initiative in fulfilling the aspirations of those who joined the democratic movement through effective policies and practices.

She added, “The core foundation of a democratic system is the legislature, represented by the Parliament. It is an institution that carries the voice, aspirations, ideas, and needs of the people, playing a crucial role in governance through policymaking, law-making, planning, and oversight.”
