Doctors’ Association slams Health Minister’s ‘royalty for doctors’ remark

KATHMANDU: The National Doctors’ Association (NDAN) has strongly objected to the recent statement made by Minister of Health and Population Pradip Paudel, in which he suggested that countries hiring Nepali doctors should pay a royalty to Nepal.

In a press release issued by NDAN, the association expressed shock at the minister’s remark, calling it insensitive and offensive, especially during such a delicate time for the healthcare sector.

“Such a statement has made doctors feel like commodities being sold for money,” the release stated.

The association, led by President Dr. Bikash Gauchan and General Secretary Dr. Samrat Parajuli, argued that the main reason behind the medical brain drain is the ministry’s own inefficiency.

They pointed out that many capable doctors are being compelled to leave the country due to economic insecurity, lack of professional opportunities, and disrespectful treatment at home.

The NDAN said creating an environment for doctors to remain and serve in the country should be the ministry’s top priority. This, they said, can be achieved through quality education, fair employment opportunities, adequate security, and respect for medical professionals.

Instead of making impractical and controversial remarks, the NDN urged the ministry to adopt constructive policies and has submitted an eight-point recommendation focusing on retaining doctors through support and incentives.

Minister Paudel made the controversial remark on Wednesday, May 28, during a program at the National Trauma Center, stating that Nepal should charge royalties from countries employing Nepali-trained doctors. He shared that this idea came to him during his participation in the World Health Assembly in Switzerland.
