New political understanding with king inevitable: RPP Chair

KATHMANDU: Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Chairman Rajendra Lingden has claimed that the demonstration held on Thursday (May 29) at Ratna Park was, in effect, a public referendum on the monarchy versus the republic.

Speaking to journalists at the Bijulibajar Bridge on the second day of the RPP-led indefinite movement demanding the return of the monarchy, Lingden argued that a new political understanding with the king has become inevitable.

“Yesterday’s events reflected a referendum-like situation,” Lingden said, comparing the turnout at the pro-republic demonstration called by the prime minister with the crowds at the royalist rally.

“The presence spoke for itself. Instead of using words like ‘capture,’ ‘control,’ or ‘weaken,’ I urge the prime minister and political leaders to opt for dialogue and consensus.”

Lingden reiterated his call for the government and major parties to initiate a new agreement with the monarchy and warned that the ongoing movement would continue until that happens.
