Janamat-NUP merger disrupted following Resham’s arrest

KATHMANDU: The planned unification between the Janamat Party and the Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUS) was postponed following the arrest of NUP patron Resham Lal Chaudhary.

Chaudhary was arrested from Kamaladi and transferred to Dillibazaar Jail in accordance with a prior Supreme Court verdict, just hours before the official merger announcement was to take place on Wednesday.

Janamat Party Chair Dr. CK Raut confirmed the postponement via social media, stating that the government deliberately arrested Chaudhary on the very day of the planned unification in an act of political retaliation. He urged party cadres to return home peacefully.

In a statement on social media, Raut wrote: “As we were preparing to announce party unification at Nepal Academy, we received news that Resham Chaudhary had been arrested by Nepal Police at the venue and sent to Dillibazaar Jail to implement an old court decision.”

“We strongly condemn this action. As a result, today’s unification program has been postponed, and all leaders and members have been requested to return home. Further updates will be provided after a party meeting.”

Chaudhary, the main accused in the 2015 Tikapur incident, had been released from prison on May 29, 2023, following a presidential pardon.
