KATHMANDU: The Family Planning Association of Nepal (FPAN) has approved a proposal to amend sections of its statute during a special general assembly held recently. The meeting also discussed the organization’s future plans and strategic direction.
Presidents from 28 districts, central office-bearers, and members of the central working committee participated in the assembly.
On the occasion, FPAN President Rajendra Bahadur Shrestha emphasized the need for collective efforts to make the organization self-reliant. Executive Director Dr. Praveen Shakya briefed participants on various programs being implemented by the Association, according to a press release issued by FPAN.
Treasurer Nirman Kumar Shrestha and member Kamala Sapkota also highlighted the importance of seeking support from donor agencies to ensure the organization’s sustainability and operational efficiency.
Established in 2016 BS through the leadership of prominent social worker Dwarika Devi Thakurani, FPAN is a pioneer in providing sexual and reproductive health and family planning services in Nepal.
Currently, it operates in 31 districts, offering services through centers located in 350 municipalities and rural municipalities.
Its focus remains on delivering accessible, quality care to disadvantaged, marginalized, and vulnerable communities, with more than 80 percent of service providers coming from these same communities.
In recognition of the initiation of Nepal’s family planning program on September 18, 1959, the Ministry of Health and Population declared September 18 as National Family Planning Day in 2014.
Looking ahead, FPAN has launched a new strategic plan for 2023–2028. The plan prioritizes family planning and person-centered services, comprehensive sexuality education, community solidarity, institutional development, and long-term sustainability.
The goal is to expand sexual and reproductive health and rights programs over the next five years in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals set by the government.
