State-owned media should improve their performance, Minister Gurung says



KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung has said that the state-owned media should be updated in the changed context.

Addressing the 40th anniversary ceremony of Nepal Television here Thursday, Minister Gurung stated that national unity will be strengthened only if the people were given right information.

Minister Gurung also suggested the public service broadcasting (PSB) to perform its role to serve the people and vowed to ensure policies and budget from the Ministry for PSB implementation.

He also asked the officials to discharge their responsibilities.

The government spokesperson said that the Nepal Television and Radio Nepal despite being the state-owned media should revise themselves in the changed context adding that the two institutions carry the glorious history with them.

The PSB model came in the same spirit and its relevance will be justified only if information to the people was provided at their doorsteps, Minister Gurung viewed.

Likewise, Minister Gurung said that ensuring intergovernmental relations among the three layers of government and awakening people by disseminating objective information was the main responsibility of PSB.

Ministry’s Secretary Radhika Aryal said that institutional assimilation of Nepal Television and Radio Nepal is yet to be done after the beginning of PSB.

She asked the officials there to fulfill their duties with high morale without any grudges on officials’ management.
