Festivals help strengthen national unity: President

KATHMANDU: President Ram Chandra Paudel has expressed his belief that festivals like Sonam Lhosar play a vital role in strengthening national unity across Nepal.

In his message of best wishes for the Sonam Lhosar festival today, which is celebrated by the Tamang community, the President emphasized that such festivals promote mutual goodwill, tolerance, and a sense of fraternity in Nepal’s diverse, multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, and multi-cultural society.

“I hope that the Sonam Lhosar festival further reinforces unity among all Nepalis and inspires everyone to work together towards building a prosperous and socially equitable country,” said President Paudel.

Sonam Lhosar, celebrated on Magh Shukla Pratipada (the first day of the bright fortnight in the month of Magh, according to the lunar calendar), marks the New Year for the Tamang community.

During the celebration, the Tamang people worship their clan deity, perform nature worship, reflect on Buddha’s teachings, and engage in festive gatherings to share joy.

The festival is also observed by other communities such as the Hyolmo, Thakali, Jirel, Nesyangwa, Bhote, Dura, Lepcha, and others, each celebrating it according to their unique customs and traditions.
