Smart Telecom victims press for addressing their concerns

KATHMANDU: Victims of Smart Telecom have requested Minister for Communication and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel to intervene in resolving issues such as the telecom’s tower management and house rent.

In the meeting with the Minister on Friday, they said that they have been suffering for a long time and that Smart Telecom victims expected positive intervention from him in resolving the problems caused by Smart Telecom.

After listening to the problems of the victims, Minister Kharel stated that no one would be subjected to injustice.

He said, “We will not let anyone face injustice, and we will take the initiative to solve the problems after consulting with the regulatory body.”

Krishna Bahadur Thapa, coordinator of the Victims of Smart Telecom Tower, said, “Three years have passed since the company was dissolved, but the towers have not been managed. The rent for the towers has not been received, nor has the electricity bill been collected.”

They say that many Nepali workers lost their jobs when Smart Telecom was shut down. The investment of businessmen who had invested in smart cards and SIM cards has gone to waste.

The licence of Smart Telecom was automatically cancelled on April 6, 2023 as no application was submitted for renewal of the licence in accordance with the Telecommunications Act.
