Barshaman Pun: Congress and UML’s actions triggered political turmoil

DANG: NCP leader Barshaman Pun ‘Ananta’ has said the people’s frustration under the leadership of Nepali Congress and CPN-UML led to the political upheaval the country is facing today.

Addressing a party unification gathering of the Lumbini Province Committee in Lamahi on Saturday, Pun accused the two major parties of mistreating citizens while in government. He said the former coalition of Congress and UML toppled the Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda–led administration that was working to promote good governance.

Pun said his party repeatedly warned that public dissatisfaction was rising, but Congress and UML refused to listen. According to him, this ultimately helped fuel the Gen-Z movement. He acknowledged that although the Communist leadership analyzed and understood people’s anger, they failed to take leadership of it in time.

Pun stressed that the ongoing unification among more than a dozen communist factions aims to address Gen-Z demands for accountability and to strengthen democratic republicanism.

He claimed that the unity led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Madhav Kumar Nepal has shaped a strong mainstream communist force that will be pivotal in Nepal’s political future.

He expressed confidence that the party would emerge as the number one force in the mid-term elections scheduled for March 5, saying their growing support makes this “inevitable.”

Pun criticized past communist unity efforts for failing due to “authoritarian and individualistic tendencies” within UML Chair KP Sharma Oli’s leadership. That failure, he said, opened space for populist forces to rise.

He called on leaders such as Ghanashyam Bhusal, Janardan Sharma, and Netra Bikram Chand “Biplav” to join the unified communist stream under one flag, arguing that true change is only possible through broad public support and strong organization.

Pun concluded that the newly united force will work toward good governance, prosperity, and ultimately socialism, guided by the lessons of history and the trust of the people.
