NC leadership to hold another round of talks today as dispute over 15th General Convention persists

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba is holding another round of talks with Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka and General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma today as the party remains divided over the timing of its 15th General Convention.

The meeting is scheduled for 2 PM at President Deuba’s temporary residence in Maharajgunj.

The NC has repeatedly postponed its Central Committee meeting amid deepening disagreements over when to hold the convention. In an effort to break the deadlock, Acting President Khadka and the two General Secretaries have been engaged in discussions with Deuba since Thursday.

The dispute centers on whether the general convention should take place before or after the House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 5, 2026. The Central Committee meeting, which began on October 14, remains inconclusive.

General Secretaries Thapa and Sharma have insisted that if the convention cannot be held within Poush as per the party statute, the party must go for a special general convention. However, leaders close to Deuba argue that holding the convention before the elections is impractical.

During recent discussions, Deuba is understood to have indicated that conducting the general convention in January may still be possible, offering a potential basis for compromise.
