273 prisoners still absconding from Jaleshwor Jail

MAHOTTARI: A total of 273 prisoners who escaped from Jaleshwor Jail in Mahottari district on September 9 during the Gen-Z movement are still on the run.

According to Jailer Ashok Kumar Chhetri, 576 inmates, including 40 Indian nationals, had fled the facility after breaking out. Of them, 303 have so far returned. He said the tally of those confirmed to have escaped continues to rise as verification progresses.

The prison administration had urged all escapees to return on September 10. Chhetri warned that inmates who fail to surrender will face action under the Prison Act 2079 BS and other prevailing laws. Legal action will also be taken against anyone found hiding, sheltering, or assisting the fugitives.

Of those who fled, 13 were apprehended by Indian police while attempting to cross into India and were subsequently returned to Nepali authorities.

The remaining returnees came back voluntarily. Chief District Officer Indradev Yadav said that a search operation is ongoing to locate the absconding prisoners.
