Koshi corridor blocked for a month due to landslide

SANKHUWASABHA: The Khandbari–Kimathanka road section under the North-South Koshi Corridor has remained completely blocked for a month following a massive landslide on August last week.

The landslide, which occurred in Makalu Rural Municipality-3, washed away nearly 200 meters of the road, bringing vehicular movement to a complete halt.

The disruption has not only affected transportation but also severely impacted the daily lives of residents in surrounding villages. Locals report damage to private land, farmland, crops, and vegetation.

According to Ram Bahadur Gurung, Chief of the Road Planning Office, immediate repair work is not possible as the landslide-affected area remains boggy, making it difficult to operate heavy machinery. Preparations are underway to begin repair work once the weather improves and river flow recedes.

Continuous coordination is being carried out among local representatives, the District Administration Office, and officials from Bhotkhola and Makalu Rural Municipalities. However, the prolonged closure has led to severe disruptions in the supply of food and daily necessities, further straining local communities.

Bhotkhola Rural Municipality Chairperson Bangchhedar Bhote said locals are being forced to use alternative routes, and described the situation as “extremely difficult” for residents.

As a key strategic route connecting eastern Nepal with China, stakeholders warn that the extended closure has national-level implications, affecting trade, mobility, and regional connectivity.
