Over 6,100 police personnel to be deployed in Kathmandu Valley for festive season

KATHMANDU: More than 6,100 police personnel will be deployed across the Kathmandu Valley during the upcoming festive season, according to a special security plan prepared for Dashain, Tihar, and Chhath.

Kathmandu Valley Police Office Chief and Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) Dan Bahadur Karki said the personnel will be mobilized across the three districts—Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur—to prevent and respond to crimes that tend to increase during the festivals.

“Incidents such as theft, robbery, and looting are more common during Dashain, Tihar, and Chhath. We have developed a strategy and started implementation accordingly,” said AIG Karki, adding that security deployment will be led by district police chiefs.

To reduce crime, various measures have been introduced, including increased patrolling, bicycle patrols, use of sniffer dogs at checkpoints, deployment of plainclothes officers, as well as mobilization of Crime Response Vehicles (CRV) and Quick Response Teams (QRT).

In addition, 78 passenger assistance booths have been set up across the three districts to support travelers. Police have also encouraged the public to celebrate the festivals with both confidence and caution, as drone surveillance will also be used for monitoring.

AIG Karki noted that due to the recent escape of prisoners during the Gen-Z protest, the risk of criminal activity—including theft and robbery—has increased this year. He urged the public to report unfamiliar or suspicious individuals in their neighborhoods.

To ensure quick response, crime response teams have been formed under all 18 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) in the Valley, with arrangements in place to reach incident sites immediately, he added.
