Arnico Panday faces cybercrime probe for harassing emails

KATHMANDU: Arnico Panday, a central committee member of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, allegedly sent obscene and abusive emails to a woman, according to a complaint filed with the Nepal Police Cyber Bureau.

Pandey was arrested on August 27 based on the complaint.

The woman, who has requested anonymity under the name Cyber Bureau 13, provided evidence to the police showing that the emails contained offensive language and abusive content that caused her mental distress and harassment.

She has requested legal action under the Electronic Transactions Act and compensation for the trauma endured.

Pandey, also a former member of the National Planning Commission and an employee of the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), reportedly sent offensive messages via Gmail and WhatsApp after she contacted him for advice regarding her son’s interest in studying science. The complaint states that he also made abusive phone calls using derogatory language.

The Cyber Bureau is investigating the case with four-day custody granted by the Kathmandu District Court to examine the allegations under the Electronic Transactions Act.
