MP Nagina Yadav condemns alleged racist remarks by KMC Police Chief

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress lawmaker Nagina Yadav has raised objections against Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Chief Rajunath Pandey, alleging that he made racially discriminatory remarks against scrap metal traders.

Speaking during the urgent discussion session of the House of Representatives on Friday, Yadav criticized Pandey for reportedly telling protesting scrap traders that only fair-skinned Nepalis are “real Nepalis,” while darker-skinned Nepalis are not.

“This statement by the metropolitan police chief is deeply regrettable,” Yadav said. “Being Nepali is not determined by skin color but by one’s identity and birthplace.”

She further urged Pandey to apologize for his comments. “There are darker-skinned people in the Himalayas as well as in the Terai. It is the environment, not the skin color, that shapes individuals. The remarks made by the police chief are completely condemnable and he must apologize,” the MP added.
