Surkhet records 292.3 mm rainfall in 24 hours as monsoon intensifies

KATHMANDU: Nepal has witnessed intensified monsoon activity over the past few days, with Surkhet recording the heaviest rainfall in the last 24 hours.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the Khani Khola rainfall station in Surkhet measured 292.3 millimeters of precipitation, classified as torrential rain.

Senior meteorologist Pratibha Manandhar of the Meteorological Forecasting Division said the active low-pressure system has triggered heavy rainfall in certain areas, though precipitation remains scattered in parts of the western region.

Other areas have also recorded significant downpours. Panchase in Parbat received 179.3 millimeters, Banke 146.3 millimeters, Dang 138 millimeters, Darchula 107 millimeters, and Sindhupalchok 105 millimeters. Over a dozen weather stations reported rainfall between 80 and 100 millimeters, while many others recorded between 50 and 80 millimeters.

The department said rainfall is expected to continue through this afternoon and evening, with a gradual decrease likely from tomorrow. Officials noted that weather systems over the western region were locally generated, while the eastern region was influenced by a system advancing from the Bay of Bengal.
