Today marks International Day Against Nuclear Tests

KATHMANDU: Today is the International Day Against Nuclear Tests, observed globally to raise awareness about the devastating impacts of nuclear weapons and to advocate for their complete elimination.

The day has been marked annually since 2010, following a United Nations resolution calling for global solidarity in the fight against nuclear testing and proliferation.

Across the world, countries are commemorating the day through various programs—including awareness campaigns, media outreach, conferences, and public events—highlighting the destruction caused by nuclear weapons and the importance of preventing further tests.

On this occasion, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in a message marking the 80th anniversary of nuclear tests, stressed the importance of remembering the more than 2,000 nuclear test explosions conducted in the past. He emphasized that such actions must never be repeated.
