Govt aiming to introduce 121 new laws this fiscal year

KATHMANDU: Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ajay Kumar Chaurasiya said on Wednesday that the government plans to introduce 121 new laws in the current fiscal year.

Speaking at a meeting of the National Assembly’s Committee on Public Policy and Delegated Legislation, Chaurasiya said the Ministry of Law has already identified the necessary bills and submitted a legislative schedule to the Federal Parliament.

“The initiative is based on the government’s policies and programs, annual budget, periodic plans, sectoral policies, and obligations created by international treaties and agreements,” said Minister Chaurasiya. “The government is committed to equipping the judiciary with adequate resources, reducing the case backlog in courts, and enhancing free legal aid services through coordination with provincial and local governments.”

The Ministry also informed the committee that under the implementation of the Legislative Act, six regulations, five bylaws, three directives, and seven procedures from various ministries and institutions have been formally registered so far.

According to the Ministry, legal aid officers have been appointed in 74 districts, expanding access to free legal services across the country. Under the Free Legal Aid Project, 1,179 legal consultations have been provided and 799 cases registered to date.

To further institutionalize and streamline free legal services, the Ministry has prepared a draft bill on free legal aid, which is expected to be tabled within the current fiscal year.
