Govt has given high priority to promoting rice crop: Minister Adhikari

KATHMANDU: Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Ramnath Adhikari, has said that the government has given high priority to promoting rice cultivation in the country.

In a message issued today on the occasion of the 22nd National Paddy Day and Planting Festival 2082, Minister Adhikari highlighted that the ministry is prioritizing initiatives such as rice research and development, provision of quality seeds and fertilizers at subsidized rates, expansion of technology, technical assistance and knowledge dissemination to farmers, and the implementation of minimum support prices.

National Paddy Day is being celebrated across the country with the slogan, “Intensification in Rice Crop: Food Security and Self-Reliance.”

“Rice has held cultural, economic, and social importance in Nepali society since ancient times. Today, it is the staple food for most Nepalis and a core indicator of food security,” Minister Adhikari said.

“Keeping this importance in mind, we are celebrating National Rice Day and Planting Festival through various promotional and awareness-raising programs every year.”

He emphasized that rice significantly contributes to Nepal’s economy and plays a major role in the country’s gross domestic product. He noted that achieving self-reliance in rice has been given priority in Nepal’s agricultural development strategy, periodic plans, and other national policies.

The statement further said, “Based on these priorities, various rice promotion programs are being implemented by agencies and projects under the ministry, as well as by provincial and local governments through conditional federal grants.”

Despite these efforts, Minister Adhikari acknowledged that rice and paddy imports have been necessary due to rising population, the impacts of climate change, and evolving dietary habits.

He emphasized that, in line with the federal system outlined in the Constitution, local and provincial governments bear greater responsibility for agricultural production management.

Therefore, stronger cooperation and coordination among all three tiers of government is essential to achieve the national goals of food security and self-reliance.

“I hope this occasion energizes all stakeholders to minimize the adverse impacts of climate change, ensure sustainable rice production and productivity, and achieve self-reliance,” the minister added.
