Policy reforms needed to modernize agriculture: Speaker Ghimire

KATHMANDU: Speaker of the House of Representatives, Devraj Ghimire, has emphasized the need for comprehensive policy reforms to transform agriculture into a modern, commercial, and attractive profession.

He also underscored the importance of boosting production and achieving self-reliance in the agricultural sector.

Extending his best wishes on the occasion of the 22nd National Rice Day, Speaker Ghimire remarked, “A large portion of Nepal’s agriculture still depends on rainwater. The lack of irrigation infrastructure, delays in fertilizer supply, and shortages of improved seeds continue to significantly affect our agricultural productivity.”

National Rice Day and the Rice Planting Festival have been observed annually on Asar 15 with the aim of promoting increased production, modernization, and commercialization of rice farming.

This year’s celebration carries the slogan: “Intensification in Rice Crops: Food Security and Self-Reliance,” highlighting the urgency of becoming self-sufficient in food production and raising awareness among farmers and stakeholders.

Speaker Ghimire emphasized rice’s central role in Nepali society. “Rice is not just our staple crop; it holds deep economic, social, cultural, and religious significance. It is a way of life for the average Nepali,” he said.

Despite nearly 65% of the population being directly or indirectly involved in agriculture, Nepal has yet to achieve self-sufficiency in rice production.

“This reality is ironic for a country so deeply rooted in agriculture,” he added. “It calls for serious self-reflection and strategic reform.”
