Farmers must be given justice to end dependency: Prachanda

KATHMANDU: Chair of Maoist Centre and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has emphasized the need to ensure justice for farmers as a key step toward building a self-reliant economy.

In a message issued on the occasion of National Paddy Day, Chairman Dahal stressed the importance of supporting small farmers through cooperatives and ensuring their access to markets.

He also called for the effective implementation of fertilizer recommendations based on climate-resilient rice varieties and region-specific needs.

“Rice is not just our staple food—it represents our cultural identity, economic foundation, and a vital pathway to self-reliance,” said Dahal.

He noted that rice contributes more than 50% of Nepal’s total food production and serves as the backbone of the national economy.

Referring to this year’s slogan, “Intensification in Rice Crops: Food Security and Self-Reliance,” Dahal said it underlines the urgent need to boost productivity in rice farming as part of broader economic independence.

He expressed concern over the challenges farmers continue to face due to the lack of timely access to fertilizers, quality seeds, and reliable irrigation.

“During my tenure as Prime Minister, my government ensured timely fertilizer supply by increasing transparency in import and distribution, and prioritized irrigation through large, medium, and small-scale projects,” Dahal stated.

He criticized the current coalition government for failing to address these issues effectively, saying the situation has worsened under weak policies.

Calling for greater investment, Dahal urged the government to treat rice cultivation as a national priority. “The government must take this issue seriously and do justice to the farmers by ensuring adequate investment in seeds, fertilizers, irrigation, and rice zones. Only then can we intensify rice production and build a self-reliant Nepal,” he said.
