KATHMANDU: Seven individuals involved in the looting of Bhatbhateni Super Store in Koteshwar during Friday’s pro-monarchy protest have been arrested, with police continuing their search for others.
According to Kathmandu District Police spokesperson SP Apil Raj Bohora, six suspects were apprehended on Saturday in connection with the incident.
So far, a total of 111 individuals have been arrested for their involvement in arson, looting, and vandalism centered around the Tinkune protest. Among them, seven have been specifically linked to the Bhatbhateni looting.
The protest, called by the Joint People’s Movement Committee for the restoration of the monarchy, resulted in 15 vehicles being torched, fires set at 14 locations, and looting reported at 10 sites, with Bhatbhateni suffering the most significant losses.
Police are using photos and videos from social media to identify and apprehend suspects.
Among those arrested for their alleged involvement in the looting are 15-year-old Chitramaya Basnet and 17-year-old Sushmita Baral from Sindhuli, 37-year-old Nirmala Karki from Sindhupalchok, 43-year-old Sushila Kumal from Nuwakot, 41-year-old Elisha Rai from Dharan, and 70-year-old Balkumari Karki from Koteshwar.
All seven are currently being held at the New Baneshwar Police Station.
